Rebirth

“Crushed from without by overwhelming pressures, deep within her body, two of Daniel’ spermatozoa reached the corona radiata of two of Azriel’s ovum, penetrated the zone of pellucida, crossed the periviteline space, merged with the egg’s outer membrane, and were drawn into the inner cytoplasm where, illuminated for the briefest instant by an subterranean blue radiance, they began the secretive entwining of male and female chromosomes.

The resulting zygotes, fraternal twins, would bear the legacy of their preternatural creation. Azriel’s children would be celebrated as the first daughters of the Kali Yuga apocalypse.

Azriel knew none of this, and would not discover for many weeks that she was pregnant. She was aware only that the mysterious fluxes around her were fading away, the waves of sensation growing further apart and softening with each pulse. When the vibrations stopped altogether Azriel and the bewildered farmers of Shiva Puri picked themselves up from behind the rocks where they had been hiding.”
